マウイ島でのアクシス鹿の生息数は8千頭超

 マウイ島で活動を行っているマウイアクシス鹿作業部会は、島内に生息している野生のアクシス鹿の頭数調査を実施した。 同部会の調査によると、現在、マウイ島の西部には8,000頭を超えるアクシス鹿が生息しており、今後、アクシス鹿の生息状況等をさらに詳しく調査するため、20頭の雌のアクシス鹿に無線発信機付きの首輪を装着するとしている。 アクシス鹿は1959年にマウイ島に持ち込まれた外来種で、鹿の頭数増加によって、島の自然環境の破壊等が問題視されている。 なお、マウイアクシス鹿作業部会は、デラウェア大学と共同で、将来的にマウイ島のアクシス鹿を食用として活用し、島に新産業を誕生させることができないかなどについても調査を進めている。

チャイナタウンで新クイーンが就任

 オアフ島ダウンタウンのハワイシアターで11日(土)、チャイナタウン商工会議所主催のナルキッソス・クイーン(水仙の女王)の選出が行われ、オアフ島ルーズベルト高校卒業生でリリハ地区在住のブリッタニー・ウェイ・リン・リーさん24歳が、新クイーンの座を獲得した。 ブリッタニーさんは、ルーズベルト高校卒業後にシアトル大学に進学。大学で超音波技術を修得し、現在はパリモミ医療センターで超音波技師として活躍している。 ブリッタニーさんを含む今年のナルキッソス・クイーンやプリンセスたちは、今後1年間に渡ってハワイ州内の中華コミュニティの代表として活躍することになっており、在任中の訪中なども予定されている。

UHヒロ校にハワイ言語学専用校舎がオープン

 ハワイ島ヒロにあるUHヒロ校にハワイ言語学専用の校舎が完成し、11日(土)に校舎のオープンを記念する式典が行われた。 UHヒロ校では、新校舎が完成するまで大学敷地内のあちこちに教職員やスタッフのオフィスが点在していたため、関係者は「新校舎のオープンによって、ハワイ言語学関係者が一つの建物内で勤務でき、学生たちも集中して学べる環境が完成し、とても嬉しく思っています」とコメントしている。 UHヒロ校では約35年前に言語学専門の校舎の建設計画に着手。今回、長い年月を経て新校舎のオープンが実現した。
