 米魚類野生動物庁は、オアフ島内でハワイ州の州鳥であるネネの存在を確認したと発表した。ネネはハワイ固有の雁の一種で、絶滅危惧種に指定されており、オアフ島でその存在が最後に確認されたのは1700年代となっていた。 当局は今回、オアフ島カフク地区にあるジェームス・キャンベル国立野生動物保護区内でつがいのネネの存在を確認。2羽はすでに巣を作っているほか、3羽の雛が孵化しているのも確認されたとしている。
