州知事が公立のプリスクール制度導入を発表

 ハワイ州のニール・アバクロンビー知事は昨日、ハワイ州内の子どもの学力向上のため、今年8月より、州内の公立校にプリスクールを開校する予定であると発表した。 当局が開校を予定している公立のプリスクールは、オアフ島に15校、マウイ島、モロカイ島、ラナイ島に1校ずつ、カウアイ島に2校、そしてハワイ島に10校の計30校で、当局ではプリスクールの設置場所の選出理由として、校区の貧困率や学校施設のスペースなどを考慮して決定したとしている。 今回当局が開校を予定している公立プリスクールに通学できるのは、州内に住む640名ほどの4歳児で、当局では、通学できる640名の選出方法などに関しては発表していないものの、低所得者世帯の子どもが優先的に入学できるとみられている。

ハワイ諸島北西部がストリートビューに登場

 北西部ハワイ諸島にあるパパハナウモクアケア海洋ナショナルモニュメント内の5つのスポットが、360 度のパノラマで自然景観や有名スポットを見て回れるグーグルのストリートビューに登場した。 今回、グーグルのストリートビューで公開がスタートしたのは、北西ハワイ諸島で最大の環礁であるフレンチフリゲート瀬にあるターン島とイースト島、レイサン島、リシアンスキー島、パール・アンド・ハーミーズ環礁の5スポットで、インターネットを通してこれらの土地を訪れたような気分を楽しむことができる。 昨年7月にこれらの土地での撮影を行ったパパハナウモクアケア海洋ナショナルモニュメントや海洋大気局、米国野生生物サービスの関係者は「グーグルのストリートビューを通して、世界中に貴重な太平洋上の環礁の重要性を紹介するだけでなく、貴重な土地を訪れることなくインターネット上の画像を通して楽しんでもらうことで、将来的には同地区の保護につながることを望んでいます」と語っている。 グーグルのストリートビューではこのほか、2012年より、ミッドウェイ環礁国立野生動物保護区の景観等をインターネットを通して紹介している。
