 Child Care Aware of Americaが発表した最新の調査結果で、ハワイ州は、手ごろな幼稚園や保育園などに入園するのが全米で8番めに難しい州で、子育てにおいての費用負担が大きい州であることが明らかになった。 2012年の調査結果によると、全米での幼稚園児や保育園児の育児コストの平均年間費用は約$12,400で、ハワイ州では、平均的な両親の合計収入の14%が幼稚園や保育園の費用に当てられているほか、幼児の育児コストが、大学の学費より約44%も上回っているとしている。

多くの市民が皆既月食を鑑賞

 ハワイ州各地では昨夜、月全体が地球の影に隠れる皆既月食の観測会が開催され、多くの市民が夜空の神秘現象を楽しんだ。 オアフ島のビショップ博物館で開催された月食観測会には1,000名以上の市民が訪れ、ビショップ博物館のマイク・シャナハン氏は「今回の観測会は大盛況で、皆さんの自然の天文ショーを体験するチャンスを見逃したくないとの想いが伝わりました」と語っている。 ハワイ州で前回皆既月食が観測できたのは2011年11月で、次回の皆既月食は今年10月に起こることになっている。
