知事と市長がホテル税の増税を提案
ハワイ州のニール・アバクロンビー知事とホノルル市のカーク・コールドウェル市長が昨日、ホテル宿泊時に加算されているホテル税の増税案を議会に提出した。ハワイ州のホテル税は現在9.25%で、州知事と市長は2%の増税を提案している。なお、前回ホテル税が増税されたのは6年前で、その際にはホテル税が7.25%から現在の9.25%に増税となっている。 コールドウェル市長は今回の増税案について「ホノルル市はホテル税として年間4,100万ドルを得ているものの、旅行者の安全を守るための警察関連費用や公園のメンテナンス費用、市バスの運営費用などに年間7,400万ドルが必要となっています」と語り、主要産業である観光業が好調な時期に税収を増やし、さらに観光業を発展させたいとしている。 一方ホテル側は、光熱費が41%、人件費が28%増、健康保険費用が20%増となっており、これで増税となった場合、宿泊客数が減少してホテル側の負担増になりかねないとして、増税案には反対している。

H&Mハワイ店のオープンが決定
スウェーデン生まれのカジュアルブランド「H&M」が、オアフ島ワイキキ地区にあるワイキキ・ビジネス・プラザとのリース契約を締結し、ハワイ1号店を来年度中にオープン予定であることが明らかになった。 H&Mハワイ店は、3階建てで売り場面積31,000平方フィートを誇る店舗となり、ワイキキのメインストリートであるカラカウア通りとシーサイド通りの角に大きな正面玄関が設けられる予定で、関係者は、レディース、メンズ、ティーン向けアイテムのほか、アクセサリーやランジェリー、マタニティーやスポーツウェアなども販売するとしている。
