ハワイ州の自然保護局は昨日、オアフ島ノースショアの海岸線にザトウクジラの屍骸が漂着したと発表した。漂着したクジラの死骸はすでに漂着現場より撤去されているものの、当局では、クジラの死骸を目当てに集まったサメが海岸線近くまで近寄ってくる可能性もあるとして、市民に対して数日間は注意をするよう呼びかけている。 今回発見されたクジラは、体長13~15フィート、体重は約2,500~3,000ポンドの生後2~6週間の子どものクジラで、今後、クジラの体内から摂取された組織等から死因の原因究明が進められる予定となっている。なお、州政府や連邦政府などの関係機関が協力し、死因の調査等を行うためにクジラの死骸をハレイワ・ボートハーバーまで牽引しようと試みたものの、沖合いでイタチサメなどがクジラの死骸に群がり危険と判断されたため、クジラの死骸は沖合い4マイルの地点で海に放出されている。 ハワイ諸島周辺では今年に入りすでに5頭のクジラの屍骸が発見されており、アメリカ海洋大気局(NOAA)関係者は、「通常、クジラの死骸は年間1~2頭が発見されていますが、今年は例年に比べて死骸の発見件数が増加しており、クジラの頭数減少に影響が出るのではないかと懸念しています」と語っている。
