 ハワイ州のニール・アバクロンビー知事とホノルル市のカーク・コールドウェル市長の両名が昨日、ブロードウェイの大人気ミュージカル「ライオンキング」のハワイ公演が決定したと発表した。ライオンキングは2007年にハワイで上演されており、今回で2度目の公演となる。 ライオンキングは来年1月14日より8週間にわたってオアフ島のニール・ブレイズデル・センターで公演予定で、10名以上の団体チケットが3月28日より、一般チケットが7月20日より販売される予定となっている。 ライオンキングはブロードウェイで16年間にわたって上演されている人気作品で、2007年のハワイ公演では180,000枚以上のチケットが販売されており、ホノルル市当局では、今回の8週間の公演では120,000枚以上のチケットが販売され、100万ドル以上の経済効果がもたらされるだろうと試算している。

水星のクレーターをパヒヌイと命名

 水星にあるクレータのひとつが、1980年代に他界し、現在も伝説のハワイアン・ミュージシャンとして親しまれているギャビー・パヒヌイ氏の名前を冠し、「パヒヌイ」と命名されることが明らかになった。 今回のクレーターの命名は、水星の製図作業に携わっているエンジニアらによって実現したもので、すでにNASA(アメリカ航空宇宙局)によって承認されている。
