 オアフ島ワイキキのメインストリートであるカラカウア大通りとロイヤルハワイアン通りの交差点に、歩行者のためのスクランブル交差点が設置され、昨日より同地区での斜め横断が可能となっている。 ホノルルのカーク・コールドウェル市長は「車両が信号停止している間に歩行者が安全に横断ができるようになったことで、歩行者の安全だけでなく、ドライバーの安全も確保できるようになるほか、周辺の渋滞緩和にもつながるでしょう」と語った。 ホノルル市は今回のスクランブル交差点の設置のために$5,000を出資。一晩でスクランブル交差点への変更作業を終了させている。

市長が特定ビーチ等での禁煙法を承認

 ホノルル市のカーク・コールドウェル市長は昨日、ホノルル市内の特定のビーチや公園での喫煙を禁止する禁煙法案を承認し法案が成立した。 即日施行となった禁煙法案では、オアフ島の人気観光スポットであるワイキキのデューク・カハナモク・ビーチ、クヒオ・ビーチ・パーク、アラモアナビーチやサンディビーチのほか、ホノルル動物園やワイキキシェルなどのあるカピオラニ公園などでの喫煙を禁止すると定めているものの、市当局側は、現時点ではアラモアナ・ビーチ・パーク以外はハワイ州の管轄となっており、州からの承認を受けるまでは、同法案の対象地区はアラモアナ・ビーチパークのみとなっているとしている。なお、州からの承認を得るまでには今後数ヶ月がかかるとみられている。 新禁煙法案では、対象地区で喫煙を行った場合に、初犯で$100、1年以内の2回目の違反をすると$200、さらに違反した場合には$500の罰金が科せられる。
