 世界航海を続けている古代ポリネシアで用いられていた木造航海カヌー船のレプリカとして知られるホクレア号とその姉妹船であるヒキアナリア号が、最初の寄港地であるタヒチに無事到着した。 タヒチに到着した2艘のカヌーには、20歳から72歳までの29名の乗組員が乗り組んでおり、乗組員のひとりはタヒチまでの航海について「我々が学んだこと、そして苦労のすべてが15日間の航海の成功によって報われた気がします」と感想を語った。 ホクレア号とヒキアナリア号は、近代計器を一切使わず、星の動きや海流、波などの自然の動きだけを頼りに航海を続けており、今回、ハワイ島ヒロ港を出港してから15日をかけてタヒチへ到着している。

州がオバマ大統領図書館の候補地に名乗り

 ハワイ州当局が、オバマ大統領が退任後に、任期中に関与した公務に関する資料を保管、 閲覧できる「オバマ大統領図書館」の建設候補地に正式に名乗りを上げ、建設候補地募集の最終受付日である16日(月)までに建設計画書などを提出していたことが明らかになった。 オバマ大統領図書館の建設候補地としては、ハワイ州のほか、ニューヨーク州、そしてシカゴを含む5つの建設候補地を発表しているイリノイ州などが16日までに必要書類の提出を行ったとされている。 ハワイ州ではオアフ島のカカアコ地区の8エーカーの土地にオバマ大統領図書館の建設を計画しており、関係者は、大統領図書館が建設されることで、観光名所として大きな経済効果がもたらされるほか、図書館建設によって新たに2,000ほどの雇用が生まれると試算している。
