 フード&ワイン誌が実施していた「ベスト・ニュー・シェフ・ランキング」 で、マウイ島のマイグラント・オン・マウイのシェルドン・シメオン氏が、太平洋地区のベストシェフ賞の栄冠を獲得した。シメオン氏はこのほか、同ランキングの全米でもっとも精力的なトップシェフ10人のひとりにも選出されている。 ハワイ島ヒロ生まれのシメオン氏は、リーワード・コミュニティカレッジの料理プログラムで学んだ後、マウイ島のマウイ料理アカデミーを卒業。過去には、食のオスカーとも呼ばれ、 レストラン、シェフ、レストランオーナー等に送られる名誉ある賞として知られるジェームズ・ビアード賞で2度も準決勝まで進んだことがあるほか、2012年には、StarChefs.comでライジングスター賞も受賞しており、今もっとも旬なシェフとして注目を集めている。

キング通りに自転車走行レーンを導入

 ホノルル市当局は、オアフ島の中心地にあるキング通りに、自転車専用の走行レーンを導入すると発表した。 当局では今回、キング通りのアラパイ通りからユニバーシティ通りまでの区間に自転車専用ルートを導入する計画で、当局関係者は「ホノルルのコールドウェル市長は、より多くの市民に自転車での移動を安全に楽しんでもらいたいと望んでおり、今回の自転車専用走行レーンの導入を決定しました。自転車専用走行レーンを導入することで、自転車利用者がより安全に道路上で移動ができるようになります」と語り、自転車専用走行レーンを導入しても、周辺で交通渋滞を引き起こしたりする可能性はないとの見解を示している。 なお、今回導入される自転車専用走行レーンは2年間の試験導入として実施され、今後、本格的に導入するか否かが決定される予定となっている。
