 オアフ島ワイキキで1956年より営業を続けてきたインターナショナル・マーケットプレイスが、昨日の午後8時に閉店し、その長い歴史に幕を下ろした。なお、マーケットプレイスの入り口近くの数店舗は、今月末までの営業が許可されている。 営業最終日の昨日、以前は100店舗以上が軒を連ねていたインターナショナル・マーケットプレイス内では、数店舗のみが営業を行ったものの、営業している店舗もほとんどの商品を売りつくし、ディスプレイケース内がほぼ空っぽの状態となった様子もみられ、マーケットプレイスを訪れた顧客からは「この場所がなくなると考えただけで胸が詰まりそうで、今日は買い物をしながら泣くのを我慢することになりそうです」など、マーケットプレイスの閉店を惜しむ声が聞かれた。 インターナショナル・マーケットプレイスの再開発計画を進めているクイーン・エマ・ランド社では、同地区にNYの老舗百貨店であるサックス・フィフス・アベニューを中心とした新ショッピングセンターの完成を目指しており、同社では2015年度には新ショッピングセンターの営業を開始したいとしている。

 オアフ島カイルア地区でクリスマス休暇を満喫中のオバマ米大統領と家族は昨日、島内の人気観光スポットであるハナウマ湾を訪問し、数時間にわたってプライベートタイムを過ごした。 大統領一家はその後、カイルア地区にあるカキ氷店「アイランドスノー」でサクランボとレモンライム味のカキ氷を味わい、カイルアにいた市民との短い交流を楽しんだ後に、シャカサインをしながらカイルアの滞在先に戻っている。 ホワイトハウス関係者は、オバマ大統領がハワイに到着して1週間ほどが経過しているものの、大統領はゴルフをしたり、ハイキングをしたり、タウンにある高級レストランで会食するなど故郷でのプライベートな時間を楽しんでおり、今後も公的な行事等に参加する予定はないとしている。
